USDF University Approved Musical Kur Clinic #01U1276 with Ann Guptill

The sky was blue, a cool breeze in the air forced the last of the autumn leaves to dance their way to the ground. The autumn leaves were not the only ones dancing. Eleven riders and numerous auditors came form all parts of Michigan to learn about musical kurs. Ann Guptill, accomplished grand prix rider and certified instructor came to PuddingStone Manor in Davisburg, Michigan to teach the USDF University accredited clinic. Guptill gave a fabulous overview lecture Friday night that explained the guidelines for composing a musical kur. Saturday was full of riders working towards their horses best rhythm. Correct gait tempos are the basis for all good kurs. Numerous musical selections were played ranging from "wild and sassy" to "the yawn factor". We all learned that not only does the rider's taste need to be assessed but also the character of the horse. Correctly matched rider/horse combinations were a delight to watch. When the music was correctly matched we could see the horse and rider relax together and find the beat for the "dance". A few riders came with preexisting kurs hoping to put in a new twist. Most riders came de novo. Courtney Massie who recently earned first place at Region Two finals for her forth level musical kur ride that she composed herself received a well reverend round of applause from the auditors. Saturday night we feasted on sub sandwiches and were motivated as we watched FEI riders working their magic on video. Sunday morning we were off to an early start. Riders were finishing up the horse's tempos, making musical choices and putting finishing touches on choreographic movements. Many thanks to riders Cathy Labadie, Barbara Baker, Courtney Massie, Marie Joppich, Linda Cramer, Peggy Nagler, Becky Burmann, Krista Waston, Mari Moon, Nancy Barnard, Robert Morehead and Beverly Rapp.

The Linda Zang Dressage Clinics

Once again PuddingStone Manor was fortunate enough to play host to one of the luminaries of the Dressage world. On November 20, and 21 Linda Zang (O) who is one of only two Olympic judges in the United States conducted a two day dressage clinic at PuddingStone Manor. Not only has Zang earned the highest ranking as an FEI official, she also sits on the AHSA FEI Competition Committee and the AHSA Licensed Officials Committee. Her commitment and participation goes well beyond these committees. She has traveled to many remote countries in order to promote and support Dressage as an international sport. Zang has earned an impressive reputation not only for her impeccable eye as a judge but also for her ability to teach both the horse and rider.

Saturday's cold and rainy weather did not deter anyone from having a grand time. Ten riders came from all parts of Michigan and from as far away as Waukesha and Mukawango, Wisconsin to seize this golden clinic opportunity.

Zang worked with riders from second level to FEI. During the clinic Zang focused mostly on the riders position which resulted in noticeable improvement in the riders form. "We had a great time" said Sarah Michael (S judge) and Kim Nelson (clinic rider). According to PuddingStone's Beverly Rapp "All of the participants have expressed an interest in riding with her again. There is already waiting list".

Many thanks to the clinic riders Mari Moon, Maggie Auld, Sandy Tull, Diane Rodich, Lisa Pierson, Debbie Buck DeJonge, Shelly Reichart, Kim Nelson, and Carrie Conrad

October Events At PuddingStone Manor

The Gary Rockwell (S) Clinics

The normally cold and blustery weather of Halloween was replaced with sunshine and warmth during the Gary Rockwell (S) clinic on October 30, 31 at PuddingStone Manor Inc. in Davisburg, Michigan. Ten riders and many auditors came to gain insight into the art and sport of Dressage.

Gary Rockwell (S) is an international competitor and AHSA "S" judge. Some of his accomplishments include: In 1990 he was a team gold medallist at the Olympic Festival. In 1993 and 1994 he competed very successfully with the USET in Europe winning individual placing as well as a team silver at CHIO Rotterdam and a team bronze at the World Championships at the Hague, Holland. He currently resides in Wellington, Florida where he teaches and trains year round.

At PuddingStone Manor, Rockwell worked with riders ranging from second to FEI level. He helped both horse and rider gain insights into their strengths and weaknesses in a pleasant and persistent manner. Rockwell's excellent eye, and great sense of humor helped prod the participants to make noticeable improvements in their technique. The riding environment with sound system, indoor and outdoor auditing allowed comfort for everyone. "It is wonderful having Gary as a clinician," said Puddingstone's Beverly Rapp. "Gary is both an accomplished rider and judge. He is able to pick up subtle weaknesses that make a huge difference once corrected. All of the participants have expressed an interest in riding with him again. We hope to have him back in April 2000".

Many thanks to clinic riders Marie Joppich, Marian Nilsen, Sandy Tull, JoAnn Parker, Kim Nelson, Charlotte Godfrey, Barbara Baker, Dorothy Mueller , Beverly Rapp and Nancy Peacock.
